MexECO Mission
Back in 2018, we discovered a revolutionary product to help address the environmental impact of both plastic and paper straws. Our drinking straw, made from the Agave plant, is fully biodegradable, recyclable, and reusable.
Our business is led by Nick Demetriades and Gio Schiavoni, who bring a combined 35 years of experience within the hospitality industry.
The Agave Cultural Landscape of Mexico is celebrated not for objects or architecture but for the deep connection between the people of the region and the natural environment. Agave products are sold worldwide, providing sustainable support for the communities that cultivate them. Domesticated around 3500 years ago, the Agave plant has a rich history of use in its wild and cultivated states. There are hundreds of Agave varieties in different shapes, sizes, and colors. This amazing and resilient plant has been around for millions of years and is personified by the goddess MayaHeul in Mexican tradition.
Today, the Agave plant is best known as the raw material for tequila and mezcal. However, historically it has been used to produce fiber for clothing, brushes, spoons, nets, fans, rope, and even paper. The relationship between the Agave plant and the people of the region is one of mutual care: the people nurture the plants, and the plants sustain the people.
At MEXECO, we aim to continue this centuries-old tradition of collaboration between humans and nature. Using this extraordinary material, we create products that seamlessly fit into modern life while helping address a major environmental issue.
